About the Founder
(Paul Maycock, founder of Sat Nam Kundalini School)
I was working as adviser in Baghdad, Iraq, when one of my colleagues back in 2011 gave me a book which she said I should read. The book was one of spiritual content and the workings of life. After I finished the book she gave me another one which was a little deeper and talked more about meditation, healthy eating, positive thinking and the physical practice of yoga.
I feel that I was intuitively aware to avoid thinking negative thoughts, however my diet was not that great at the time. I had never meditated and for sure didn’t even think about the physical practice of yoga. So I started with daily meditations and went to a vegetarian diet. It was crazy how these two things completely changed the way I felt, not just in my mind but in my body. Soon afterwards I was indulging in physical exercise on a daily basis which after some time included the physical practice of yoga (unbeknown to me at the time, I was already practising the most traditional practise of yoga: MEDITATION).
My energy levels went through the roof, the clarity in my mind was something I had never experienced before. I felt light and alive and invincible. It was totally crazy.
Although as with many things, life sometimes gets in the way and my yoga practisce was very up and down, but something kept pulling me back, it was impossible to keep away from it.
We can fast forward to 2017 where I was working in Afghanistan. My yoga practice was still somewhat up and down, but I was getting back into a more constant rhythm. At the same time I met my now life partner, soulmate, best friend and now wife who just happened to be on her own spiritual path and a yoga practitioner.
On our first vacation home from Afghanistan we joined a yoga retreat in Northern Germany where we talked, we laughed, we cried, we fell in love. For the first time in my life I loved someone for who and what they are. We embraced each other with no expectation or a want for this or a need for that. It was and is just as it should be, just simply being and experiencing together.
We left Afghanistan soon afterwards and began our journey together traveling Asia, South East Asia, Europe and Central America. We did our first yoga teacher training in Bali and our second one in India. Both were incredible experiences, but India really touched me deep inside and my love for yoga and the truth in the most authentic and traditional aspects of Tantra, Yoga and Hatha had begun.
We started teaching live classes when we weere on the road traveling the UK and main land Europe in our camper van, mainly teaching groups of people living and working on eco-farms and that kind of thing. We then went to Thailand, Laos, Bali, and then ran our own ongoing yoga and nature retreat in Italy for around 5 months before heading to Nicaragua. There we ran a yoga school at a retreat centre for 8 months where I really found my passion in teaching Kundalini yoga. What a journey it as been!!
The first time we practised Kundalini was in Goa, India, and it was the worst yoga experience I had ever had including up to now. I was sure I would never practise Kundalini again. However Katja and I were asked to join a Kundalini class with some friends, just went with the flow and took part in the 3-hour class. It was the most eye-opening yoga experience I ever had. I was totally sold and now Kundalini is my Sadhana.

I had experienced a handful of Kundalini classes before attending Paul’s sessions, so I already understood that Kundalini has a different structure and approach compared to “typical” yoga sessions that you’d experience at a studio (which are often Hatha or Vinyasa practices.) What draws me to Kundalini is the focus on specific kriyas to help tune into different energy and intentions. I love how Paul brings great diversity and knowledge to his teaching, from the way he structures the classes, to his gentle yet direct guidance. His stamina and persistence are inspiring, and help me to stay with the movements until the end, which in turn evokes pride in my ability to complete the challenge of the journey. I’m grateful for the opportunity to practice with the support and guidance of such a grounding and dedicated teacher. Big love and gratitude for you, Paul . Kelsey xo
Classes with Paul were my first time practicing Kundalini. Just a few months later it feels like a practice I want to commit to for life. Paul holds such a space that I"m able to hold the trust for myself to challenge the mental limits I've created without ever feeling like there are any expectations on me to do more than I can handle. Paul's detailed explanations of each Kriya and caring presence set the scene for learning and growth. I'm also noticing a difference in my day to day life, I feel more calm, connected and grounded.
Kundalini classes with Paul have now become part of my weekly routine. I’m very grateful to him for introducing me to this life changing modality and for the knowledge, respect and humour he brings to his classes.
